This blog shares interesting knowledge and information of different metals such as Titanium, Molybdenum, Aluminum and so on.

Application of Titanium and Its Alloy in Sports Equipment

We know that titanium has huge commercial value in modern society. Titanium and its alloys have wide application in aerospace, marine, human implants and so on. In addition, titanium is also marching into the field of sports equipment.

The largest application area at present is that the world is using titanium to cast golf club heads. At the end of the 1980s, Japan began to develop titanium alloy cast golf heads (commonly known as wood) and achieved good results. Titanium is light in weight and high in strength. Compared with stainless steel, it can make a ball head with a larger impact surface and a larger volume, so it can be played far. What's more interesting is that when using a titanium alloy ball head, it will make a good sound when hitting the ball, which makes the athlete feel good. Therefore, the titanium alloy ball head has been greatly developed.

In recent years, high-strength titanium alloy (Ti-15-3 alloy) precision-cast ball head, newly developed precision-cast titanium ball head with tungsten alloy insert and new damped titanium alloy ball head have developed rapidly in sports equipment. Nowadays, the manufacture of titanium alloys for golf clubs has formed an industry with a certain scale of production. According to statistics, in the Japanese market, the number of golf heads sold in June was 60,000, and in 1995 it surged to 1.5 million, with annual sales reaching US$70 million. In 1996, the demand for golf club heads in the United States reached 1000 t to 2000 t. These figures are relatively old, and the figures in recent years are even more surprising.

In recent years, titanium alloys have been applied on bicycles, motor boats, softball bats, long hockey sticks, tennis rackets, harnesses, sprint spikes, mountaineering tools, snowboards, wetsuits, roller skates, fishing tackles, and competitive wheelchairs. At present, titanium and its alloys are most widely used in the aviation industry, and their application in sports equipment is 1/3 of aviation. Anyway, titanium has great potential in sports equipment.
